650 Main Street, Blackville, South Carolina, 29817
Built just after the War Between the States by an Irish immigrant, Patrick Farrell, who volunteered to join the Confederate Army shortly after arriving in South Carolina and served for four years. Patrick married Caroline Rush in 1870 after returning from the war. They had five children together. Their daughter Ann married John O'Gorman in 1895.
This 4,900 square foot home is framed by a columned, roofed two story front porch that runs the width of the home with the classic double doored front entrance welcoming residents and guests. A first floor parlor, highlighted by a fireplace and wall of bookshelves, has become an incredible reading room (with its own private bathroom) while the parlor across the hall retains its former character. Beyond the parlor is the den and thence the dining room, kitchen and first floor master bedroom; beyond the library is the “Bishop’s Bedroom Suite”, the doorway to the covered back porch and courtyard and the stairs. The second floor consists of four corner bedrooms, their shared bathroom at one end of the hall, a sitting room at the front of the upstairs hall that gives access to the upper story of the front porch, plus the stairway leading to the floored but unfinished full attic. The back porch houses the laundry area, provides additional access to several of the back rooms of the first floor and is served by a handicap ramp. Most of the floors in the home are of hardwood, most ceiling heights are ten feet or more, ornamental moldings grace most of the first floor and there are eight fireplaces, some with gas logs and some that could be restored to wood-burning status.
The grounds, surrounded by many trees on adjoining lots that serve to provide a high degree of privacy, include several older trees, extensive flowering and ornamental shrubbery, a scuppernong arbor, a small cottage (once the outdoor kitchen), a garage with room for four cars and plenty of grassy lawn for ballgames, picnics, etc. Additional heavily vegetated adjoining acreage could be available to double the size of the grounds if additional elbow room should be desired.
Picturesque Blackville, situated in Barnwell County, SC about 35 minutes from downtown Columbia, is handy to I-20, I-77, I-26 and thus to Charleston, Aiken, Atlanta, GA and Charlotte, NC. The Blackville area itself is surrounded by farmland, the famous Healing Springs, several state parks and excellent hunting and fishing.
